Hey friends !
I don’t fit in.
I’ll never be good enough.
I’m a follower, not a leader.
These thoughts are not uncommon. From time to time, past experiences or criticisms from authority figures hijack our inner voices, resulting in rumination and limiting beliefs. Our beliefs are assumed truths.
They are our inner statements about ourselves in which we are emotionally invested. They have shaped us and probably unbeknown to many of us they have been with us since childhood.
Why you believe what you believe?
This week I had flashbacks of where I came from , I could see clearly images of the places I used to walk.I was driven by these flash backs but to some extent that questioned the person I am and its this time I realised why I think the way I think and why I act the way I act, the person I am now is a product of the environment that I grew up in.
We all evolve to become a product of our environments, the things we were taught growing up and the things we adapted and all these moulded us to become the people we are today. We are defined by the family we come from by the cultures, values, economies and beliefs of the communities and countries.
Whenever we get through hard times we often lean to our beliefs, the things we were told and the things we believe to be true. But have we ever questioned these beliefs, thats rare! They have developed to become social norms and by challenging them we can face the fear of being thrown away from the tribe.
What are self limiting beliefs?
Our beliefs may not exist in our minds as explicit propositions. They may be so implicit in our thinking that we are hardly aware of them at all; yet they clearly lie behind our actions - Unknown
Sometimes these norms tend to develop strong beliefs which drive fear and some what obstacles or walls in our path, which is fascinating!.One experiment I thought about is the “Pheromones experiment” where they take an ant put it on paper, so the ant starts moving freely around the paper then they take a marker and draw a circle around the ant and the ant starts moving within the circle.
There are beliefs which are products of environment like the scarcity mindset thinking that there are few resources for everyone to earn, lacking of abundance and I would think these beliefs are limits not only in business to life in general.Limiting beliefs can sometimes act as defensive mechanism to protect ourselves from pain. These subconscious boundaries can lead to negative emotions like imposter syndrome, anxiety and procrastination.
How to get over self limiting beliefs?
Identify and challenge your limiting beliefs - the first thing you want to do is to identify the limiting beliefs and then you want to consistently challenge your thoughts.
Read and listen to podcasts - I have seen a big improvement from the time I started listening to podcasts and reading books.
Change your environment - someone said that whenever you are in your 20’s never spend six months in the same place and I see how important it is when it comes to belonging to a certain group associated with certain beliefs and habits.
MBA - surround your self with a group of people who are developing and doing things, this can help challenge some of the core beliefs you have.We can make friends online, we don’t have to have physical environments only.
Develop habits - developing habits to break old beliefs you had is a great thing, but let’s talk about habits below.
Habits
Habits defines us as these defaults we most likely to fall in to when we dont pay attention.By practicing these habits and making small changes, over time this can lead to rather big changes to your thought processes, your narrative and in turn, your habits.
Lets take for example you have the scarcity mindset you want to practice giving and after a while you may end up developing a habit of a giver and probably notice that the world is not made up of finite resources as you think. To do this you want to start small and its important to always check on yourself not to go hard on yourself but to be self conscious, one book I have seen people recommend on developing habits is Atomic habits and I will link it below.
