Hey friends !
How do you feel confident at the bottom of your journey? How do you take up enough space? How do you maintain a firm handshake in a room full of experts when you are just a beginner? Most of the times we are some what beginners in life.
Recently I have started writing on substack and also went back to YouTube after quitting two years ago, but I do like to say “ after taking a break ” just to feel good.Just after a couple of months of recording not more than ten videos I count’t stand the pressure I was getting from myself.
The gear I had, the quality of videos, all this lead to quitting but after two years am back and in the same phase again.
All I wanted that time was to embrace the beginner phase, be content with what I had while working on my goals but since then and along the way I have learnt that, this phase is a recurring thing in life and I should learn how to stand these moments.
I.Master the reps
Repetition is the mother of learning
As humans we are evolving to ignore the basics and focus on fancy algorithms and systems, but there are some things we can’t ignore, like the importance of repetition in learning. As a beginner you should take the time to make this your most powerful tool which is showing up again and again.
With time we can get better but I think the problem I had when I quitted YouTube two years ago was the urge to instant gratification.I expected random, magic growth in my creativity without putting on the hours and now looking back again, I can notice the importance of putting on the work while delaying gratification.
II.Build confidence
I think when you repeat the skill over and over again what happens is you start noticing the improvements on your own and that builds a spiral loop of motivation. The confidence builds and before you notice, it can become a habit and with time time you don’t only become confident with your work but also competent.
This is not worth mentioning but people can notice the small improvements and give positive feedback. This is motivating and can boost your confidence but I have two reasons why you should not focus on the feedback 1.these can family members or close friends trying to make you feel good, 2. You can fall into comfort zone which is distraction to your progress and growth.
III.Be comfortable in uncomfortable situations
Failing isn't necessarily a bad thing. It means you're learning something along the way as long you to continue to reflect and improve yourself.
The relationship we have with being a beginner is crucial. It comes with also being comfortable with repetition, failing, and playing outside your comfort zone. We make a choice to explore what’s outside the comfort zone and effectively preparing ourselves for life changes that force us out of it.
We can be conscious of the repetitions and it’s through those seemingly uncomfortable situations that we can cultivate habits and learn to relax in moments of uncertainty. Once we develop a muscle of handling these uncomfortable conditions we can be more creative and make quality decisions during times of uncertainty.
IV.Confront your ego
Often we confuse confidence with ego, appreciating the moment with comfort zone.As we build confidence we can embrace the leaning time and enjoy the journey of learning. Part of being a beginner is having an open mindset which yields to more learning. In all times, we find ourselves as beginners, and there lies the whole game: whether you quit or embrace the beginner phase.
We should always try to embrace the beginner phase. It's on these times we win; it's on these times we learn how to enjoy the journey. We build habits that will carry us through to the proceeding phases.
This is not a one-time phase. Let's take an example: you're trying to grow your social media page. You start from zero ("beginner phase"), you go to 1000. Now, you're looking to grow to 5000, so you have to relearn and grow to the person who can grow to 5000 ("beginner phase").
These are repeating patterns. Once we notice them, we can take time to learn and to reflect on decisions, knowing that life is an infinite loop of learning => relearning => birth.
